Market Analysis
Oral surgery encompasses various specialized fields, including oral surgeons, endodontists, orthodontists, periodontists, and pediatric dentists. Among these, oral surgeons consistently report the highest earnings, while periodontists typically report lower earnings within the oral surgery specialty.
In terms of workload, oral surgeons tend to report the highest levels of busyness compared to other specialists. Conversely, orthodontists generally report lower levels of busyness.
When considering practice affiliations, a greater percentage of pediatric dentists are affiliated with Oral Surgeon's Service Organizations (DSOs), whereas a lower percentage of periodontists are associated with DSO-affiliated practices.
The field of oral and maxillofacial pathology is increasingly recognized as crucial within the global oral surgery community. In Italy, oral and maxillofacial surgery is primarily considered a private sector service, with only a small portion of care provided through the National Health Service (NHS). According to recent data from the Servizio Study ANDI based on ISTAT data, approximately 39.7% of Italians visit an oral surgeon at least once a year, while 11.5% have never visited one. Private expenditure on oral surgery services in Italy was estimated to be around €10 billion in 2013.
Italy boasts a network of approximately 56,000 oral surgery practitioners and numerous commercial laboratories, with 11,520 oral surgeons either operating independently or as part of larger practices. Those who operate independently or in small groups outside of hospital or academic settings are typically classified as being in "Private Practice."
Conferences such as this provide a platform for researchers, practitioners, and educators to exchange insights, discuss emerging trends, address challenges, and share solutions in the fields of Oral Health and Maxillofacial Surgery. It offers an invaluable opportunity to stay abreast of the latest developments and foster collaboration within the global oral surgery community.
